What you do in Maatjie Arena

Hatch and care

Pick one of five eggs and give your pet a name. Feed it, wash it, play games with it and tuck it in when it is sleepy.

In about four days your baby grows into a child, a teen and a grown-up. How you cared for it shows in how it looks.

Battle with skill

Grown-up pets battle in turns. Block, Focus and pick the right move at the right time. Clever play beats playing for hours.

Meet the five species

Every pet hatches as one of five species, and each one has its own element, its own look and its own favourite food.

How it works

  1. Pick an egg. Choose Spark, Tide, Leaf, Stone or Ember, give your pet a name, and choose Gentle or Classic mode.
  2. Look after it. Your pet needs food, a wash, some fun and a good sleep. It tells you what it needs.
  3. Watch it grow. Babies become children, then teens, then grown-ups. Good care gives a bright, happy look.
  4. Battle and rank up. Grown-ups can practise in Training, take on other players' pets in Arena matches and climb the season's ranks, or challenge a friend to a friendly battle.

For grown-ups

  • No chat, no messages and no way for strangers to contact your child.
  • One-word nicknames, never real names, checked by a word filter and easy to report.
  • Friends only by a private code, and online status stays off unless you switch it on.
  • Nothing random is ever sold. Crates are earned by playing, and their odds are published.
  • Nothing that can be bought makes a pet stronger. Looks are just looks.
  • Purchases only happen in the Android app, always behind a grown-up step.
  • Going away? Holiday mode pauses the pet, so nothing is lost.
  • No ads, in the game or on this website.
